Mastitis is a condition affecting various animals, including hamsters, gerbils, mice, and rats. While these species are frequently used as models for studying mammary gland infections in biomedical research, there is limited understanding of their natural occurrence, epidemiology, and management. This review examines the anatomy, causes, clinical signs, pathology, and treatment of mastitis in small pet rodents, highlighting existing knowledge gaps and emphasizing the need for further research. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first review focusing on mastitis in small pet rodents, underlining the importance of maintaining mammary gland health in these pets.
Purpose: Bioeconomy is one of the largest and most important sectors of the European Union economy. It employed over 17 million people in 2021 and generated an added value of approximately EUR 728 billion. This study assessed the utilisation of the labour factor in bioeconomy sectors in Poland compared with other European Union countries. Design/methodology/approach: An analysis was conducted on employment levels and labour productivity from 2010 to 2021. The study also attempted to classify EU countries based on relative measures of average labour productivity in the bioeconomy and the dynamics of changes observed. Findings: In Poland, the bioeconomy recorded a labour productivity of EUR 12,552 per employee, which represented only 38% of the EU average. Poland ranked 25th in the bioeconomy labour productivity. Apple pomace, a by-product of juice production, is a rich source of dietary fiber and bioactive compounds, making it a promising functional ingredient for bakery applications. This study evaluated the physicochemical and sensory properties of shortbread cookies enriched with apple pomace dried under different conditions, while also analyzing the drying process, focusing on drying kinetics and powder characteristics. Pomace dried by either contact drying or freeze-drying was ground and used to replace 20% of wheat flour in the cookie formulation. Drying kinetics were best described by the modified Page model, and freeze-dried pomace showed higher grindability than contact-dried samples. Cookies enriched with pomace exhibited similar overall composition, with differences mainly observed in fiber content (9.82–11.75%). Three popular cultivated mushroom species (Agaricus bisporus, Lentinula edodes, and Pleu- rotus ostreatus) were biopreserved through a directed lactic acid fermentation process. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strain EK11 obtained from A. bisporus fruiting bodies subjected to spontaneous lactic acid fermentation was used as a starter culture. Regardless of the mushroom species, the pH value on experimental day 7 was ≤3.75, which guarantees the shelf life of fermented products; however, it decreased to 3.51–3.6 during refrigerated storage. The number of lactic acid bacteria in the final products exceeded 7 log colony forming units per mL. The fermentation process significantly reduced the caloric value and the digestible carbohydrate content, regardless of the mushroom species. The efficiency of the existing technologies for pre-sowing seed treat-ment, ensuring the high quality of seed material along with its proper clearing and sorting, has been analysed. One effective solution is the introduction of electrical technologies, the complexity of which lies in the scientific sophistication and the variety of tasks they address. The authors propose an electrotechnological complex (ETC) for pre-sowing seed treatment, which includes a working chamber, where charged grain is fed, while aerosol is delivered through adjustable sprinklers directed toward the seed flow, allowing for control over the spray stroke length. When the freely falling charged seeds enter the cloud of oppositely charged aerosol, they become intensively coated with the working solution.
