Streszczenia
Heat stress (HS) is still one of the major concerns in poultry industry, especially in tropical and sub-tropical environments. It has a negative impact on all aspects of poultry rearing. The new, as natural as possible, ways to mitigate it are constantly being sought. The aim of the study was to explore the influences of powdery form of fig (FL) and grape leaves (GL) and their mixture (FGL) in diet as a nutritional strategy adopted to alleviate the debilitating impacts of cyclic HS (35±3°C; 7 hrs daily) consequences and activate the thermoregulatory capacity in laying hens. The suggested modes of action of these feed supplements were evaluated by measuring blood serum redox status, biochemical and hormone indicators with selected vital signs. The feeding of diet supplemented with FL or GL, individually or in combination, promoted productive (feed efficiency, egg production) and physiological attributes of birds as well as eggs quality. This experiment provided promising results following the using powdered extracts (or their combination) as antioxidants in feeding strategy of layers exposed to cyclic HS over long periods. The positive changes in biochemical serum profile were reported, i.e. decrease in corticosterone and heat shock protein 70 concentrations in supplemented groups. The rectal temperature, respiratory and heart rate were reduced by the FGL group. In general, the treatment-dependent effect of supplements was found to improve productivity and physiological performance of hens under HS. These natural and safe antioxidants may be an option to mitigate the HS impact.
